Meridian Lady Wildcats Prep for 2020-21 Season

Delta Report visited the Meridian Lady Wildcats this past week during their practice. The energy level was high from the moment I came into the gym.

.Very early in the practice, Meridian was executing an intense transition defensive drill that scaled from 3 on 3 to 5 on 5. The staff was very engaged in the drill while offer pertinent corrections to enlighten the team and individuals alike.

This intense band of ballers are led by their coach, "The Little General", Deneisha Faulkner. Her passion and attention to detail was immediately obvious in her coaching style. Players who blew defensive assignments were require to come out of the drill and assume the "Lean & Rest" position. (Push up position for non-military people). While in the "Lean & Rest", her assistant coaches provided insight into the reason they were removed from t

This team is seeking to go farther than their 6A semi loss last season to Clinton High School. With returning starters senior Arianna Patton(Left) and junior Debreasha Powe (Right) both stepping into major leadership roles, they will definitely be force to recon with. While both players will surely be on the Dandy Dozen short list, their on court personas will be key to the overall success of the team. As last years top two scorers, the team will past a serious offensive punch to back up their tenacious defensive presence.

Newcomer to the varsity level, sophomore Syria Walker, looked very impressive in practice at the point guard spot. Based on what I saw in practice and what I've seen in the past of her skills, I firmly believe that Syria will rival Kennedy Davis (Pearl) as the top point guard in the state of Mississippi in the 2023 class. Whether she earns the starting nod or comes of the bench, her impact could be the very difference in how far this team goes in the playoffs.

The Lady Wildcats was going to start the season off at Jones Junior College; however, that event has been cancelled. So catch the Lady Wildcats at home or a game near you.

In the Spotlight next will be Brandon High School...
